StarlightPath's Guide To: Icebreaker Clip

Icebreaker: The hottest new tech since sliced IPBJ. Icebreaker is  a barrier clip in Ice Palace, involving the use of the Cane of Somaria to clip through the barrier inside the vanilla big key chest room. With this, the Ice Palace Bomb Jump is completely unnecessary, and even removes the potential hookshot requirement that only adds to the frustration of this chilling maze. This short tutorial will demonstrate the motions needed to complete the technique. Much like IPBJ, it is easy to learn and saves a huge chunk of time, making it a potential staple for randomizer runners of all skill levels.

Where to Find
The start of the Icebreaker clip can be found in the rightmost room of B1F. Lifting the lower skull in the second pengator room will reveal a button that opens the right door. Proceed through that doorway to enter the wrong side of the chest room.

How to Perform
Step One: Align yourself to the correct pixel as indicated, using the shadow as reference. The doorway is already the correct vertical alignment, so focus on the horizontal. You can hold your sword to assist with the alignment.

Step 2: Hold Down + Right so that you constantly run into the wall ahead of you, without the sprite moving down the wall at all. This means that the sprite is currently clipped one pixel inside the wall.

Step 3: Activate the Cane of Somaria and release movement controls at the same time. The sprite should now be inside the block, facing downwards.

Step 4: Move the sprite left for one frame. A pause buffer can be used to help ease the attempt. Your success will be determined by how correctly you performed the input.

     a) If the block has no gap between itself and the wall, as shown, you can hold up or down to complete the clip.

     b) If the block has a gap between the wall as indicated, attempt the one frame left input again. Tap up or down to verify the correct input. The sprite will face right instead of given input. If this happens, hold up or down to complete the clip.

Examples
a) This example is performed with the one frame left input performed correctly.
b) This example is performed with the left input intentionally held for too long, to demonstrate the recovery of the clip.

  1. Hi Starlightpath, came here from the ALttPR wiki.

Thanks for the guide - it was perfect, managed to get icebreaker consistently after about an hours practice.

Any chance of a follow up for Herapot and Diver Down? Your teaching style is awesome!
